I am honored to be awarded a fall 2020 residency
at Koneen Säätiö's Saari residency for my project "Mine Songs: Sounding an Altered Landscape."
"MINE SONGS is a long-term project by Sara Pajunen that explores the altered landscape of Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range through sound, image, and historical research. Manufactured sound is labeled as noise pollution, and there is no doubt that the prevalence of ambient noise is changing our world. Noise is defined as an 'unwanted' sound. For our health, can we make a choice periodically to 'want' the sound? Each sonic occurrence contains musical properties: pitch, rhythm, dynamic, duration - even timbre and sometimes harmony. What happens if we start to listen to these vibrations as music? How does our interaction with the sound shift?"
